Australia and the United States remain the only non-European countries within the top ten destinations for immigrants in 2026, according to the most recent Immigration Index published by remittance company Remitly.
The comprehensive ranking assessed 82 countries using 34 metrics across 16 categories. These ranged from economic factors like earning potential to social and infrastructural considerations including healthcare, safety, environmental quality, family support, public transport, childcare affordability, broadband access, and the presence of established immigrant communities.
European countries continue to dominate the list, with Switzerland taking the leading position after rising from second place in 2025. Iceland, the previous year’s top-ranked country, moved to second. Luxembourg maintained its third place, while Germany entered the top five for the first time, jumping from 14th to fifth.
Australia ranked fourth globally, an improvement from eighth place the previous year. The country's strong performance reflects a blend of robust career opportunities, high living standards, and a sizeable existing immigrant population, factors that collectively enhance its appeal as a destination for long-term settlement.
The United States placed seventh. It stood out mainly for its economic opportunities, earning potential, and large, established immigrant communities that provide social networks for newcomers.
Switzerland’s ascent to the top spot was linked to a balanced combination of high income levels, excellent healthcare services, reliable safety measures, and a significant immigrant presence. The country scored well across multiple domains, underscoring its broad appeal to prospective migrants seeking comprehensive quality of life.
Iceland remains highly regarded for environmental sustainability and safety, but a relative scarcity of international schools was noted as a factor that slightly diminished its overall ranking.
Luxembourg continues to attract immigrants through its effective public transport system, safety, environmental standards, and diverse expatriate population. Germany’s notable rise reflects strong social infrastructure, healthcare accessibility, environmental performance, and energy security—all important considerations in migration decisions.
The report highlights a shift in migrant priorities, noting that while economic factors remain crucial, lifestyle considerations are increasingly influential. Family support mechanisms, healthcare access, safety, and environmental sustainability have gained prominence in shaping migration trends.
No country exhibited top performance across all categories, suggesting prospective migrants evaluate trade-offs when selecting destinations. Countries offering a balance of economic opportunities and quality of life are becoming preferred choices at a time when global migration numbers remain historically high.
As migration flows continue to reshape communities worldwide, understanding these evolving preferences offers valuable insights into future policy and integration approaches for host countries. Balancing economic prospects with social well-being appears central to attracting and supporting migrant populations.
